The D/FW Mom

the moms resource for all things metroplex & beyond…..

I know people have been talking about the Toyota Prius for quite some time now, so I’m a little late with both posting and talking about this subject. But being that I own a Prius, I felt I had to say something…

If you haven’t been following the Prius story, here’s a quick recap. A few months ago, people started to complain that the Prius would inadvertently accelerate when they were trying to slow down in traffic, at a stop light, etc. At first Toyota said from their research they determined the floor mats were to blame, and recommended drivers to remove the floor mat or flip it upside down. Then, Toyota said the floor mats were only part of the problem. The major issue was that the accelerator pedal was “too” long. In my opinion I have to wonder how could this have been overlooked in the years of research and development that takes place in car design.

But it gets even better (by better I mean worse for Toyota)…later Toyota said they found an issue with the braking system! In fact, when they mentioned what happens, I knew exactly what they were talking about because it’s happened to me while driving. When the Prius his a bump, pothole, or anything in the road while braking, the computer thinks you need traction control assist and releases the brakes, which means you are still moving when you are supposed to be stopping. Combine that with the first issue and you have  a serious problem on your hands!

So why do I bring this to your attention? If any of my friends here on The DFW Mom have a Prius or other Toyota model, please take it to a dealership and have it checked, or go to www.toyota.com, click on “Recall Information” and see if your model is affected. I will say that since my Prius is on the “affected” list, I no longer drive it, and definitely don’t use it with my “bundle of cuddly joy” because I don’t want to take any chances. Now my husband, he can drive it all he wants to! Besides, he’s Superman… at least to me anyways!

OMG!!! I’m so sorry I haven’t been keeping up with my posts. Time is flying by so fast and my little “Buzzle” is growing more each day, it seems like my days never end. Ah well, that’s life, right?!?

Okay, so here’s a question: Do any of you have experience with “Your Baby Can Read”? Yes, I actually have it. We haven’t started yet, but we’re hoping to really soon. We got it for Christmas and it was back-ordered for what seemed like forever, but really ended up being about 3 months! But alas, patience prevailed and it arrived, now I just need to open up the DVD!

I need to stop rambling and get back to the question….okay, okay, so does anyone have experience with it? I’m quite sure it’s a question all our mommy friends have been asking, but just can’t find an answer.  If you have used it, or are using it, will you please send me your opinion and I’ll publish it. Once we actually start using it, I’ll be sure to put up my thoughts and hopefully it includes that I have a “little genius” on my hands!

the dallas fleaThe purpose of this post is simple. Go to the Dallas Flea. Why?

  • Who doesnt love a flea market?
  • Dallas really needs one.
  • Now we have one (just for one day though …ugh..)
  • Go support it & maybe we can do it again soon!
  • Tons of vendors….its an “edited” flea market so you won’t find any old toilet seats or wacky hair brushes from the 50’s. It’s all stuff that you and grab and go!
  • The perfect place to pick up a gift for that “artsy fartsy” friend in your life.

For complete details and information about the particpating vendors, visit, www.thedallasflea.com.

See you Saturday!

thanksgivingWhat’s on your Thanksgiving menu this year? Trying out any new recipes?

Every Thanksgiving I attempt to make something new….something unexpected. This year, I’m just flat out of time. Work has been stupid crazy (where did all this work come from?), home life is super busy (my baby is growing so fast and I try so hard to enjoy every moment) and my entrepreneurial ventures are starting to take up a good chunk of time as well.

But yesterday, while perusing the chaos known as Central Market, I came across a huge timesaver. I picked up a Greenberg Turkey. Talk about 20 lbs of culinary goodness. In 2008, Greenberg Smoked Turkey made Oprah’s ” Favorite Things” list and I totally understand why. From Oprah.com:

“ This gorgeous turkey is made in an old-fashioned brick smokehouse with a dry rub of fresh, earthy spices and pure hickory wood. Sam Greenberg uses the same technique his grandfather taught his father 70 years ago, and he ships it fully cooked and ready to serve. This is hands-down the best turkey I’ve ever tasted; it’s mmm-mmm smokin’!”

So this Thanksgiving, I’m substituting the traditional oven baked turkey for this smoked one. It was pretty reasonably priced considering you purchase it ready to serve. $49.99 at Central Market now through Thanksgiving. Hurry and get yours fast, I was almost knocked to the ground trying to grab mine yesterday. Or..you can order online at www.gobblegobble.com.

PrintHave any of you ever participated in the Turkey Trot? If you haven’t you should check it out this year. It’s an 8 mile run/walk around White Rock Lake on Thanksgiving morning.  For a lot of people it’s more of a social event than exercising, but either way it’s so much fun. I normally get a group of friends together and we always say “we’re gonna run the whole thing this year”, but what happens is that we just end up walking and gossiping for the remaining 7 miles!

And I can’t forget that the proceeds are supporting the YMCA, so if you can make it, try to get a group together and get out there! To learn more check out their website here!

More about the Turkey Trot:

The Capital One Bank Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot is the largest Thanksgiving Day event of its kind in the country. Starting from humble beginnings 41 years ago at White Rock Lake, it has grown into the undisputed “Way to Begin Thanksgiving Day” for thousands of locals as well as those who travel to share in our great event.

The Trot tradition has now extended through generations of participants who celebrate the holiday with grandparents, relatives, friends and their youngest who we look to see with their own families in the years ahead. The Dallas YMCA supports strong kids, strong families and strong communities – all of which are represented at the Trot. Participants are also helping to support important YMCA programs. We look forward to seeing you – bring a big group! – to this year’s Capital One Bank Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot.

woodallHi everyone, I hope all of my friends here are having a great week! I just had a wonderful lunch with my husband at Village Burger Bar in West Village, and it was great. But since I was close to downtown, I decided to see first hand what all the news was about in regards to  the demolition going on for the Woodall Rodgers Park

So of course, since this was my first time being down there since demo started, I got turned around because of the construction. I didn’t even know the St. Paul exit was gone! Which of course is where I wanted to get off the highway. Next thing I know, I’m all the way on 35 headed for the Tollway…what a trip! But, I wasn’t worried. I said I had to turn around and see where this park is going to go, and imagine what it will look like when it’s complete. So that’s what I did.

After seeing how the park will be over the highway, I was blown away! Check out the website for yourself. It’s www.woodallrodgerspark.org. Since I love Chicago and Grant Park, I was so excited to read that the developer is taking cues from there and other prime park locations across the nation.  This is going to be such an exciting venue, with concerts and other outdoor activities for families to enjoy!

I can’t wait for them to finish so I can take my little “Buzzle” out there and enjoy the scenery of the new park!

maclaren1I don’t know if any of you have a Maclaren stroller for your little bundle of joy, but if you do please take note. Federal product-safety regulators said they have recalled one million Maclaren USA strollers after reports that a side hinge on the products had amputated the fingertips of 12 children.

Maclaren USA is offering a free repair kit that includes hinge covers for their strollers sold in the U.S. since 1999. If you have one of these strollers please call the closest major retailer (Babies R Us, Target, etc.) to see if they have the repair kit in stock.

The good thing is that going forward over the next few years the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is going to develop tougher standards for many infant and toddler products – including strollers, cribs, and playpens.

Be Safe!
